The principles of Firmitas, Utilitas, and Venustas, first outlined in 30 BC by Roman architect and military engineer Marcus Vitruvius Pollio and dedicated to his patron, the emperor Caesar Augustus, define what makes a structure truly successful: strength, functionality, and beauty.
